Abstract:
At the Diocesan Synod of 1908, the Prince-Bishop of Ljubljana, Anton Bonaventura Jeglič, undertook to write booklets to teach the faithful the basics of the Catholic faith and morals. The project was broadly conceived and systematic. The target audience included both genders and all ages. However, Jeglič’s oversight during the publication of the first brochure, To Grooms and Brides, was exploited by liberals, who began an unrelenting campaign against him. By the end of 1909, the situation calmed down, and the following year Jeglič was able to write four more educational booklets for different groups of believers. The teachings in three of the aforementioned booklets – To Young Men (Volume II: Life According to the Faith), To Parents: Education Guidance, and To Young Women (Volume I: Christian Life) – are, on the one hand, based on Catholic moral teaching, but on the other hand, they also reflect the state of the profession at the time, as Jeglič read many medical books and writings.
